Our Atkins Business provides whole life cycle solutions in project management, project controls, quality and technical assurance and asset management, and delivers some of our largest projects. Project Controls is integral to the successful delivery our portfolio of projects and this includes functional leadership and the application of the standards for how we govern our projects.

With this in mind, we are looking to recruit a Planning Manager for openings we have in our Signalling Business in multi-disciplinary rail bids & projects. The successful candidate will work within our key portfolios including on some of the largest multi-million-pound major bids & projects in the Transportation sector and increasingly collaborative programmes across markets.

The successful applicant will be the facilitator providing comprehensive Project Controls to the project teams and to the client. As the Planning Manager you will report into the Project Controls Manager, with accountability to the Project Manager.

Requirements:

  • Experience of programming multi-disciplinary engineering design and managing the resulting interfaces.
  • This role requires the Planner to carry out their Project Control duties with minimal supervision, collaborate and take initiative in the production of Project Programmes and Tender Programmes.
  • Must have an excellent understanding for how projects are designed, procured, constructed and commissioned.
  • Excellent communication skills and be a proactive team member ensuring the business governance is met.
  • Experience of preparing planning and scheduling outputs (project resource histograms, performance analysis data and CPI/SPI) and acumen when presenting to project teams, clients and stakeholders.
  • Must demonstrate a detailed understanding of Planning and Project Controls Techniques including, budget and spend management, change control, Earned Value Management, data analysis, trend analysis and Work Package Management.
  • Working knowledge and experience of various construction contracts including NEC.
  • Previous experience of managing/ mentoring Junior planners desired, allocating tasks, checking achievements and providing constructive feedback, direction and management.
  • An expert user/ practitioner of Primavera P6.
  • Advanced capability and experience in Excel.
  • Experience of Schedule Risk and Cost analysis, Claims and large projects up to £50m.

Responsibilities:

  • You will be responsible for all aspects of the Projects programme and Project Controls, defining and managing programme level inter-dependencies, constraints and interfaces.
  • Represent and drive Project Controls Policy, attend and guide client progress meetings.
  • Provide development and regular supervision to junior members of the team as required.
  • Familiarity with commercial and financial aspects of project management including the ability to advise on contractual procedures relating to contract schedules, delays and assessment of extension of time claims.
  • Nurturing customer relationships and any required customer engagement activities, take a pro-active approach to cross-discipline engagement and collaboration to identify and resolve issues and facilitate a collaborative approach between project teams.
  • Provision of project performance data, project schedules and reports in a concise and timely manner as required by the project’s teams.
  • Provide valued and focused insight on schedule performance, identifying any project deviations and slippages, reports and communicate issues to senior members of the team.
  • Delivery necessary reports highlighting quality and issues within the programme for Senior Management and giving appropriate planning advice.
  • You will deliver the Period Programme Update and information regarding, resourcing, changes and delays that have impacted the programme on a period-by-period basis.
  • Provide assurance of third-party project schedules to ensure compliance and fitness for purpose.
  • Undertake schedule risk analysis, working with teams to identify risks and opportunities, assess likelihood and impacts and develop mitigations.
